Writing problems

You can't remember how a character learned something

You believe the character knows a fact but cannot locate the conversation, discovery or inference that supplied it. Checking dialogue repeatedly is slowing revision.

How PlotDirector can help

Start here

Character knowledge timeline

The character’s knowledge timeline gives the learning event a scene reference you can return to.

Choose a character and follow their recorded learning, suspicion and misunderstanding through linked scenes.

Look for The conversation, witness or discovery that supplies the fact and the next scene relying on it.

Why this happens

A source may be implied, scattered or removed during an earlier edit. Until you locate it, uncertainty about provenance should not be treated as proof that the knowledge is impossible.

A source scene may establish only part of a fact. Record the extent of what was learned, rather than letting a partial discovery silently become complete understanding later.

What to look for

  • Trace the fact back to its first recorded use
  • Look for a source scene or credible inference
  • Check whether a deleted passage carried the explanation
