Writing problems

You're not sure what some scenes are contributing

You can describe what happens in a scene but struggle to explain why it belongs in this particular book. Its dialogue or atmosphere may be enjoyable while its contribution remains uncertain.

How PlotDirector can help

Timeline · scenes and chapters

Scene summaries and purpose labels let you compare a passage with the scenes that depend on it.

See scenes grouped under chapters in manuscript order, with their summaries, purposes and linked story elements available for inspection.

Look for A change, decision, discovery or later consequence that would be lost without the scene.

Why this happens

A scene's work can be quiet: establishing an expectation, changing a relationship or giving meaning to a later choice. Difficulty naming that work is a reason to inspect it, not proof that it should go.

A reflective scene might make a later refusal understandable without advancing an external objective. Identify that contribution before deciding that a lack of overt action makes the scene expendable.

What to look for

  • Describe what is different after the scene
  • Identify a later moment that depends on it
  • Try stating what the reader would lose if it vanished
