Writing problems

The story seems to stop moving

The draft contains activity and conversation, yet the situation at the end of a stretch resembles the situation at its beginning. You may want development that the sequence is not delivering.

With scene values recorded, compare their shape across the manuscript. The graph gives you a pattern to inspect; the creative judgement remains yours.

Why this happens

Progress can involve knowledge, commitment, relationships or options rather than overt action. Quiet passages can move a story, while eventful ones can repeatedly restore the starting position.

A pause can deepen the meaning of a choice without changing external circumstances. Look for that contribution before equating reflective writing with a story that has stopped developing.

What to look for

  • Compare the situation at the ends of the stretch
  • Track decisions or discoveries that remain consequential
  • Look for actions whose effects are immediately cancelled
