Writing problems
There are too many characters to keep straight
Returning to the manuscript means checking names, roles and previous appearances before you can write. Minor figures become difficult to distinguish from people who will matter again.

Characters
Character records give names, roles and established details a consistent place to return to.
Keep character records together, then open an individual character to review established facts and linked appearances.
Look for People you repeatedly confuse, records with too little distinguishing context and the scenes that establish each role.

Why this happens
A growing cast creates retrieval work as well as creative work. The difficulty may come from scattered records or similar introductions, not from an intrinsically excessive headcount.
A character introduced once and recalled much later creates a different memory demand from someone present throughout. Review those introductions in context before deciding that the cast is simply too large.
What to look for
- Record each person's role and first appearance
- Find characters introduced together with similar functions
- Check which names the reader must retain for later
