A character's development goes flat

The character encounters new situations but responds from much the same position for a long stretch. If you intended development, their later choices may feel insufficiently connected to experience.

PlotDirector character arc comparing emotional weight, tension and intensity across Mara’s scenes.
One character’s recorded development and story involvement.

Why this happens

Some characters are deliberately stable, and some changes are withheld until their meaning becomes clear. The concern is whether the recorded experiences support the development you actually intend.

A character may become more committed to an existing belief rather than abandon it. Compare the cost and context of that commitment before deciding that no development has occurred.

What to look for

  • Compare responses to similar pressures at different points
  • Trace experiences that alter belief or commitment
  • Check whether later choices retain consequences of earlier learning
