Writing problems

A relationship stops moving for too long

The same disagreement or degree of closeness returns through several encounters. If you want the relationship to develop, it can feel as though its scenes keep restarting.

How PlotDirector can help

Start here

Relationship Map

Comparing story positions gives you specific encounters to review for development.

See recorded connections at a selected story position. Compare positions to review how states, intensity and each side’s perspective change.

Look for Encounters that repeat the same state and events that should alter what the characters can do next.

Connections and their recorded states at a chosen story position.

Why this happens

Stability, restraint and very slow change can be deliberate. Stagnation is worth inspecting when encounters intended to matter leave the relationship in effectively the same position.

A recurring argument can develop if its stakes or participants' expectations change. Compare those differences before treating every return to the same subject as repetition without purpose.

What to look for

  • Compare what each encounter changes in trust or expectation
  • Find consequences that survive into the next meeting
  • Check whether repeated conflict develops a new cost
