Writing problems

Your characters see the same relationship differently

One person treats a connection as secure while the other sees it as temporary, hostile or unequal. Writing their shared scenes becomes confusing if you use one description for both.

How PlotDirector can help

Start here

Relationship Map

Directional relationship records let you compare what each side believes at a chosen position.

See recorded connections at a selected story position. Compare positions to review how states, intensity and each side’s perspective change.

Look for Where the two views differ, what each character knows and the behaviour that follows from that difference.

Why this happens

People can interpret the same event differently. The inconsistency may be in your notes rather than the novel, especially when private expectations are not visible to the other participant.

One person may interpret a favour as proof of loyalty while the other regards it as repayment of a debt. Their later choices can remain consistent with those different interpretations.

What to look for

  • Record what each side believes at the same story point
  • Compare actions with those beliefs
  • Mark when one person learns how the other sees the connection
