Writing problems

Things happen, but the story doesn't seem to build

Plenty happens, but each episode seems to reset the situation. Reordering several scenes would make little difference to the decisions that follow.

How PlotDirector can help

Start here

Plot Lines Workspace

Follow the relevant line’s contribution roles and stored dependencies to compare cause with response.

Follow selected storylines through their recorded scene contributions. Focus isolates one line; Weave shows shared scenes and the gaps between contributions.

Look for An action that changes the next scene, or a sequence that would play out the same way without the earlier event.

Selected storylines, shared scenes and the gaps between contributions.

Why this happens

Events can share a protagonist without forming a chain of consequences. Episodic structures may deliberately work this way; a cumulative plot needs earlier actions to change later options.

Try connecting two major turns with a sentence explaining how the first changes the second. If the connection is only that one happens afterwards, inspect the choices between them.

What to look for

  • Trace what each major decision makes harder or easier
  • Find consequences that disappear between scenes
  • Test whether an episode changes the next meaningful choice
