Writing problems

Too many things are happening at the same time

Several people are active during the same interval and you cannot easily tell what each could witness, interrupt or respond to. Separate chapter sequences hide their overlap.

How PlotDirector can help

Start here

Timeline

Compare the scene dates and times across the people or threads involved.

Compare scene order with the dates, times and locations recorded for each scene. Select scenes to inspect the details behind the sequence.

Look for Events that overlap, shared deadlines and reactions that depend on another sequence having reached a particular point.

Why this happens

Parallel action is often drafted one strand at a time. Local sequences can be sound while the shared schedule remains unclear, especially when information or travel connects them.

Two scenes can overlap without showing their events minute by minute. What needs checking is whether a shared participant, message or resource can connect them in the way the draft requires.

What to look for

  • Align the start and end of parallel activities
  • Check who can communicate during the overlap
  • Identify actions that require the same person or resource simultaneously
