A character has an object they shouldn't have

A character uses or produces an item, but the last established holder was somebody else. The scene may need a handover, an opportunity to acquire it or a different interpretation of ownership.

How PlotDirector can help

Start here

Continuity Explorer · object journey

Follow the recorded asset states around the relevant scene range.

Follow recorded asset states across a scene range. Restrict the view to assets, then inspect the object and scene entries that need to agree.

Look for The previous holder, the acquisition or handover and the first use by the new character.

Why this happens

Knowing that an object exists does not give a character access to it. Revision can preserve the use while removing the transfer that once made it possible.

An exchange need not always be shown directly, but the surrounding circumstances must allow it. Identify the opportunity before deciding whether an extra handover scene would add anything useful.

What to look for

  • Find the last confirmed holder before the use
  • Check exchanges and access opportunities between them
  • Distinguish possession from ownership or knowledge of its location
