Writing problems

A character's movement between places doesn't make sense

You know the departure and arrival, but the path between them does not seem to fit. A person may travel too quickly, cross an unavailable route or appear without a plausible arrival.

How PlotDirector can help

Start here

Timeline

Compare departure and arrival scenes using their location and timing details.

Compare scene order with the dates, times and locations recorded for each scene. Select scenes to inspect the details behind the sequence.

Look for A possible route, the available interval and any intervening scene that changes where the character can be.

Why this happens

Movement depends on time, route, access and starting position together. A missing transition in the record is different from a journey that remains impossible after those facts are known.

A later arrival might require access to a route the character has not yet obtained. The relevant constraint may be opportunity or permission rather than distance alone.

What to look for

  • Confirm the last reliable departure and next arrival
  • Compare the route and travel conditions
  • Check what else occupies the same interval
